R.C. Sproul: Post-Christian Christianity

The following 2 quotes are from R. C. Sproul's (1939-2017) book Faith Alone: The Evangelical Doctrine of Justification

"Does saving faith require a trust in the righteousness of Christ alone as the grounds of our justification? Or may a person have a different view of the gospel and still be a Christian?"

"The Reformation was waged, not over the issue of justification by faith, but over the issue of justification by faith alone. It was the Sola of Sola Fide that was the central point of dispute."

Daily Quote for Thursday, October 1, 2020

The following advice to pastors comes from a sermon by Dr. David P. Murray (Flee, Fight, Follow). Dr. Murray says that he first heard this from Pastor John MacArthur.

How a Man Becomes A Man of God

"Fling him into his office. Then tear the office sign from his door, and replace it with a sign that says, 'Study.' Take him off the mailing list. Lock him up with his books, and his typewriter, and his Bible.
Slam him down on his knees before texts and broken hearts and the lives of a superficial flock and a Holy God. Force him to be the one man in the community who knows about God. Throw him into the ring to box with God until he learns how short his arms are. Engage him to wrestle with God all the night through, and let him come out only when he's bruised and beaten into being a blessing. Shut his mouth from forever spouting remarks and stop his tongue from forever tripping lightly over every nonessential. Require him to have something to say before he breaks his silence. Burn his eyes with weary study. Wreck his emotional poise with worry for the things of God. Make him exchange his pious stance for a humble walk with God and man. Make him spend and be spent for the glory of God. Rip out his telephone. Burn up his success sheets. Put water in his gas tank. Give him a Bible and tie him to the pulpit. Test him. Quiz him. Examine him. Humiliate him for his ignorance of things divine. Shame him for his good comprehension of finance, batting averages, and political party issues. Laugh at his frustrated effort to play psychiatrist. Form a choir, raise a chant, and haunt him night and day with 'Sir, we would know God!' When at long last he does assay the pulpit, ask him if he has a word from God.  If he doesn't, dismiss him. Tell him you can read the paper yourself. You can digest the television commentary. You can think through the day's superficial problems, and manage the weary drives of the community and bless the assorted baked potatoes and green beans better than he can. When he does speak God's Word, listen. And when he's burned out finally by the flaming Word, consumed by the fiery grace blazing through him, and when he's privileged to translate the truth of God to man and finally has himself transferred from earth to heaven, wave him away gently. Blow a muted trumpet. Lay him down softly. Place a two-edged sword in his coffin. And raise the tune triumphant. For before he died, he had become a man of God!"

Calvinism, Hyper-Calvinism, and the Call of the Gospel, by Dr. Martyn Llody Jones (1899-1981)

"Stop and ask yourself, 'What am I doing?' You will be dead long before this world will ever be put right. What, therefore, will happen to you?" - Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones (1899-1981)

Calvinism, Hyper-Calvinism, and Arminianism, by Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones (1899-1981)

Many years ago I picked up a small booklet by Dr. C. D. Cole. This booklet was being given away for free at a Baptist church, Many Baptists hold to Calvinism, as is expressed in the London Baptist Confession of 1690. The church did not. As I started reading this pamphlet I came across the following:

"The system of truth known as Calvinism was preached by Augustine at an earlier date, and before Augustine, by Christ and the Apostles, being especially emphasized by the Apostle Paul. The system of error known as Arminianism was proclaimed by Pelagius in the fifth century. Between these two there is no middle position; every man is either one or the other in his religious thinking."

While this was the position I held (and still hold today), I knew it was not the position of the leaders of this church. And so I brought that paragraph to their attention and they promptly removed it from the free literature they were handing out.The title of the book was The Bible Doctrine of Election.

Recently, I went on Amazon to see if it was still in print. It is. And you can buy it new for $928.99! (It is 59 pages long). You could by How to Be Born Again by the late Billy Graham (1918-2018) for $12.49. But then, maybe you get what you pay for!

Anyway, if you would like to learn more about Calvinism, the first book I would recommend is the Bible. Then you may also wish to read The Five Points of Calvinism

  • But the distinction needs to be made between a mere desire to escape hell and the desire to be saved from sin. The desire to be saved from hell is a natural desire – no one wants to burn. The desire to be saved from sin is a spiritual desire resulting from the convicting work of the Holy Spirit, and God’s electing grace is the very mother of this desire.”
  • Election took place in eternity; Salvation takes place when the sinner believes.”
  • The theology that God votes for us, the Devil votes against us, and that we cast the deciding ballot is entirely outside the pale of Scripture teaching, and is almost too ridiculous to notice.”
  • Those who go to hell will have nobody to blame but themselves, while those who go to heaven will have nobody to praise but God.”
  • The Bible doctrine of “WHOSOEVER WILL” does not imply the freedom or ability of the human will to do good. The human will is free, but its freedom is within the limits of fallen human nature. It is free like water; water is free to run downhill...”

My comments:

This small 59 page booklet sells for $900 on Amazon, although you can get it used for much less. You can buy a book like How to Be Born Again, by the late Billy Graham, for much less but then, maybe you get what you pay for! The book I would most recommend for someone who wants to know more about the Bible doctrine of election is The Five Points of Calvinism, by

While you are waiting for Amazon to deliver that book, why don’t you get a head start on learning about one of those five points by listening to the following sermons by Rev. Paul den Butter?

Daily Quote for Saturday, September 26, 2020

Quotes by Pastor Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834 - 1892)

"The Hebrews have a saying that God is more delighted in adverbs than in nouns: 'tis not so much the matter that's done, but the matter how 'tis done, that God minds. Not how much, but how well! 'Tis the well doing that meets with the well done. Let us therefore serve God, not nominally or verbally, but adverbilly.'" - Ralph venning, as quoted in Spurgeon's Sermon Notes

Israel Now News - Episode 400 - Sondra Baras

The Bible says:

"For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved..." - Romans 11:25,26a (Audio)

There are many who believe we may be very close to the time when this "blindness" is lifted and Jews all over the world will accept our Lord Jesus as their long-awaited Messiah! And when that happens - and it will happen! - the following Jewish hymn may be slightly rewritten so it could be included in our Christian hymnbooks!
