I saw...Hugh Hefner...Standing at the Bar of God!

I Saw the Dead, by Dr. David P. Murray

The text for this sermon is Revelation 20:12:

"And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works."
--------------------------

Pastor Charles Haddon Spurgeon passed away on January 31, 1892 - 125 years before Hugh Hefner passed away. On the surface, one might say that these two men had very little in common. And they would be right. But one thing they both have in common is they both have to stand before our Lord Jesus Christ and give account of their lives.

I can almost hear our Lord Jesus said to Pastor Spurgeon, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord." And I can hear Pastor Spurgeon - seeing Hugh Hefner - say:

"I picture myself standing at the bar of God.… I see you standing in the midst of that throng, and the eye of God is fixed on you. It seems to you that he is not looking anywhere else, but only upon you, and he summons you before him; and he reads your sins, and he cries, "Depart ye cursed into everlasting fire in hell!'" (From Spurgeon's sermon Compel Them to Come In!)

Thoughts for Saturday & Sunday, September 30 & October 1, 2017

"An advertisement keeps popping up for a new paraphrase of the Bible. It's a full page, color photograph of a woman who appears to be young, sophisticated, well educated, with a hint of cynicism. 'Pastor,' the caption reads, 'if you want to reach me, you better watch your language.' The inside cover elaborates: 'Distractied by deadlines and bills, this is the only time she takes to nurture her spiritual life. You can't afford to lose her attention when you reference Bible passages that are too lofty and obscure.' Why can't a good pastor respond, 'No, this isn't about making things comfortable for you. If you are baptized, then this speech that the Bible uses is your language. You have to make an effort to understand it, to live in its world, and to breath its air. If you are too distracted by deadlines and bills to take any time outside this one hour a week for your faith, then you'll pardon me for not losing the rest of my congregation to the world just for you." Thoughts for Friday, September 29, 2017

"We admire a man who was firm in the faith, say four hundred years ago...but such a man today is a nuisance, and must be put down. Call him a narrow minded bigot or give him a worse name, if you can think of one.

"Yet imagine that in those ages past Luther, Zwingli, Calvin and their compeers had said, 'The world is out of order,  but if we try to get it right we shall only make a great row, and get ourselves into disgrace. Let us go to our chambers, put on our night caps, and sleep over the bad times, and perhaps when we wake up things will have grown better.'

"Such conduct on their part would have entailed upon us a heritage of error. Age after age would have gone down into the infernal deeps, and the pestiferous bogs of error would have swallowed all. These men loved the faith and the love of Jesus too well to see them trampled on.

"It is today as it was in the Reformer's days. Decision is needed. Here is the day for the man, where is the man for the day? We who have had the gospel passed to us by martyr hands dare not trifle with it, nor sit by and hear it denied by traitors, who pretend to love it but inwardly abhor every line of it...look you, sirs, there are ages yet to come.

"If the Lord does not speedily appear, there will come another generation, and another, and all those generations will be tainted and injured if we are not faithful to God and to his truth today. We have come to a turning point in the road. If we turn to the right, mayhap our children and our children's children will go that way. But if we turn to the left, generations yet unborn will curse our names for having been unfaithful to God and to his Word." - Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892)

As Venezuela Starves, Maduro Tells Army to Prepare for U.S. 'Threats' - foxnews.com

Excerpt from this article:

"Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, fresh off calling on the inhabitants of his starving nation to eat rabbits that had been kept as pets, is now asking his army to make sure it has 'rifles, missiles and well-oiled tanks at the ready' amid a war of words with the United States."

In the 1996 musical Evita, Madonna portrays Evita Duarte, the "First lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952 (according to Wikipedia)  One of the songs that Evita (Madonna) sings in this musical is "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina."

Well, don't cry for Evita. She's dead. Cry for Argentina. And after your done crying for Argentina, cry for America. The only reason Americans are not eating their pets right now is because we're still able to con, I mean, convinced people to loan us money.

Two thousand years ago as the Roman Soldiers were leading our Lord Jesus up to Calvary where there were going to crucify him, there were several women nearby weeping. Our Lord Jesus turned to them and said:

"Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?" (Luke 23:28-31)

Thoughts for Wednesday, September 27, 2017

"If you knew that you could live in luxury for the rest of your life but that by doing so it would absolutely destroy the future for your children, your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren would you do it?  Well, that is exactly what we are doing as a nation.  Over the past several decades, we have stolen 15 trillion dollars from future generations so that we could enjoy a dramatically inflated level of prosperity." - $15 Trillion  Dollar Party, by Michael Snyder (Note: First published in 2012. The National Debt is now over $20 Trillion.

Talk show host and constitutional scholar Mark Levin has said:

"You should view these politicians with the deepest contempt you can possibly imagine.  What they are doing to this country, what they are doing to our finances - there is not a criminal in any federal prison, state prison, city or county jail with respect to financial crimes of any sort who collectively could have done the kind of damage that Barack Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and yes, willing, timid, gutless Republicans have done to this country! To your future, to your children and your grandchildren. What they are doing is with malice and with forethought." (emphasis mine) (source)

Someone once wrote:

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discover it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship and then  a monarchy."
