Timothy McVeigh Chose the poem Invictus to be his final statement prior to being put to death:

"Out of the night that covers me, black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be, for my unconquerable soul.

"In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance, my soul is bloodied, but unbowed.

"Beyond this pale of wrath and tears, looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years, finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

"It matters not how straight the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."

The Bible says:
"It's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." - Hebrews 10:31

And

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men..." - 2 Corinthians 5:10,11 (Audio):

Here is a sermon based on 2 Corinthians 5:10,11. It may have been profitable for Mr. McVeigh to have listened to it before going on to meet that Living God:

Serious Preaching in a Comedy Culture, by Dr. David P. Murray

As for the poem, Invictus, here is a Christian response:

"Out of the Light that dazzles me, bright as the sun from pole to pole.
I thank the God I know to be, for Christ the conqueror of my soul.

"Since His the sway of circumstance, I would not wince nor cry aloud,
Under that rule which men call chance, my head with joy is humbly bowed.

"Beyond this place of sin and tears, that life with Him! and His the aid.
Despite the menace of the years, keeps, and shall keep me unafraid.

"I have no fear, though straight the gate, He cleared from punishment the scroll.
Christ is the Master of my fate, Christ is the Cptain o fmy soul."
- Dorothea Day
