In 2007 "From 1776 to 2000, the first 224 years of U. S. History, forty-two U.S. presidents borrowed a combined $1.01 trillion from foreign governments and financial institutions. But in the past 4 years alone the Bush administration borrowed $1.05 trillion." (Source)
When George W. Bush became president in 2000, our national debt was $5.67 trillion. When Barack Obama became president in 2008, our national debt was $10 trillion. When Barack Obama was reelected for a second term the national debt was $16 trillion. (Source)

Someone once said:
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy."
