This would not surprise the Apostle Paul, who 2000 Years ago wrote:
"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who
opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing
himself that he is God - 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4
And also:
"For the time will come when men shall not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth and be turned unto fables." - 2 Timothy 4:3,4
