Engaging the LGBT Community, by Landon Chapman

This is an excellent podcast and I highly recommend it. There are some Christians who want to criminalize members of the LGBT community (See: 4 Reasons the Magistrates Have a Duty to Criminalize Homosexual Acts, by Matthew Trewella). And there are Christians who single out these people as though they were the worst sinners imaginable (See: Russell Brand Hosts the Westboro Baptist Church).

But a lot of Christians feel like they are on the ropes, fighting for their very existence (See: The History of Religious Liberty and Religious Liberty Under Attack, both by Jim Schneider).

Still, it's important to keep in mind that our Lord Jesus didn't command his followers to defend their rights, but rather to:

  "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." - Mark 16:15,16

If and when it becomes illegal for Christians to follow that command, they need to "obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29) As Dr. David P. Murray says in When Government Tries to Be God:  "We will be respectful. We will give our reasons. But we will say, No!"

To paraphrase  Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892):

"If [members of the LGBT community] will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms around their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for."

Should Christians Hate Homosexuals?

Absolutely not! Just because Christians believe the Bible, and the Bible calls homosexuality a sin, does not mean we should hate them. It means we should pray for them. And if they want to sue us for not backing a cake or taking pictures for their wedding, let them do so.  As the great Reformer Martin Luther wrote:

"Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also.
The body they may kill,
God's truth abideth still.
His kingdom is forever."
(A Mighty Fortress Is Our God)

And as Our Lord Jesus says:

^"Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you." - Matthew 5:10-12

The Christian's attitude toward homosexuals can be summed up in the following quote by Pastor Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892):

There is a (very irreverent!) joke, based on John 8, where Jesus is brought a woman caught in the act of adultery. The religious rulers tell Jesus the law says she should be stoned. Jesus answers and says "He that is without sin cast the first stone."

Everyone in the crowd looks down at their feet in silence, and then a woman comes through the crowd with a giant rock over her head and crushes the lady's head in, killing her on the spot. Then Jesus says,  "You know mom, sometimes you really piss me off!"

Homosexuality, like a great many other sins in the Bible, is wrong and Christians need to speak out against it. But not after the fashion of the Westboro Baptist cult. The same apostle Paul who wrote Romans 1:26 &27 also said:

"(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)"

I believe that if Pastor Charles Haddon Spurgeon were alive today, he would preach a sermon titled: Ye Men of the Westboro Baptist Church: Turn or Burn!

While I applaud Cracker Barrel's decision to return Duck Dynasties items to their stores, I'm much more impressed with companies like Hobby Lobby who are willing to take a stand against evil because God says it's evil, and not because their accountants say it is a good business move!
