Controversy rocks pope’s effort to clean up Vatican Bank:

"Pope Francis’ decision to replace the Vatican secretary-of-state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, a close friend of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, has prompted speculation among seasoned Vatican observers that the dismissal announced Friday was a fallout of efforts to reform the Vatican Bank. Secretary of state is arguably the most powerful Vatican office, second only to that of the pope."
