Ex Peanut Exec Gets 28 Years For Salmonella Outbreak

Ex Peanut Exec Gets 28 Years For Salmonella Outbreak - newser.com

Excerpt from this article:

"A former peanut company executive was sentenced today to 28 years in prison for his role in a deadly salmonella outbreak, the stiffest punishment ever handed out to a producer in a foodborne illness case. The outbreak in 2008 and 2009 killed nine Americans and sickened hundreds more, and triggered one of the largest food recalls in US history."

Lawyer Calls Life Sentence For Knowingly Selling Salmonella-Tainted Peanut Butter And Killing 9 "Truly Absurd"

Lawyer Calls Life Sentence For Knowingly Selling Salmonella-Tainted Peanut Butter And Killing 9 "Truly Absurd" - thedailysheeple.com

Excerpt from this article:

"While it is true the penalty is one of the harshest ever recommended in a food safety related infraction, Parnell’s attorney Ken Hodges went on the record to call the recommended life sentence 'truly absurd.' Absurd? Really? The guy knowingly sold products for consumption tainted with deadly bacteria. Nine people died and from the number of those who fell ill, it’s only by mere luck more people didn’t die at Parnell’s hands. Mass murder is mass murder, regardless of the apparent motive (greed) or the defendant’s depraved indifference."

Kudos goes to Costco who caused 1 million jars of peanut butter (25 tons!)  to be dumped in landfill rather than sell it to their customers.  The following is from BarfBlog: Why Salmonella Needs To Be Prevented And Controlled. 1Million Jars Of Peanut Butter To Be Dumped In Landfill.

"After extensive testing, Costco agreed to a court order authorizing the trustee to sell it the peanut butter. But after getting eight loads, Costco rejected it as “not merchantable” because of leaky peanut oil.
Coll said “all parties agreed there’s nothing wrong with the peanut butter from a health and safety issue,” but court records show that on a March 19 conference call Costco said “it would not agree to any disposition … other than destruction.”
