Preying on the Disabled

I used to work as a primary care giver for a quadriplegic.  And so it bothers me to see stories about someone stealing from a quadriplegic (see Quadriplegic Man Robbed of IPone He Used to Communicate).

Stealing is wrong - God says in the 10 Commandments, "Thou shalt not steal." (Exodus 20:15). But to steal from someone who is paralyzed from the neck down is extremely wicked. Almost as wicked as what Americans are doing when they vote for politicians like Barack Obama - and George W. Bush! - who borrow - steal! - trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars from future generations who are going to have to suffer the consequences of our foolish actions today.

From the folks she meets way down there.

I think the about article is incorrect - I think the number of people getting on Social Security Disability - inappropriately - far exceeds 25%. I think it is probably closer to 50%.

I spent close to 9 years in prison, but for the 9 years prior to that I worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in long term care and acute care (hospital) settings. I'm not an expert on medicine, but I have gotten to know real disabled people. And many of the people getting on Social Security Disability today have no business being on it.

What they need is a job. There are people in wheel chairs gainfully employees in every state in this country. The same is true with many other 'disabilities.'  There are many people on disability why are there because they do not want to work. They want to lay on the couch and watch movies on their big flat screen TV and play the latest video games on their new computers, while they text their friends on the smart phone. All of which they bought with their disability payments.

Social Security & Medicare - Where Does the Money Come From?

I was listening to a guy on talk radio today - I don't recall his name but he was filling in for Rush Limbaugh (a.k.a. El Rushbo!). Anyway, he asked the rhetorical question: "Where does the money for Social Security and Medicare come from? The Tooth Fairy or Santa Clause?"

Then he answers his own question by saying, "No, it comes from some other American!"

I know many will object to this. They will say that workers pay into Social Security today and they will get the money back when they retire. In other words, the theory goes, they are really getting back their own money.

It sounds good. But then most pyramids and ponzi schemes sound good at first glance.  The fact is that Americans who are paying into Social Security today are not going to see any of that money come back to them - especially if they have 10 or 20 years until they retire.

Of course, by that time America will be a socialist utopia where everything is free and no one has to have money anyway, so it is a mute point (And if you believe that, I'll buy you a one way ticket to Cuba!).

Who Cares if Paralyzed Rats Can Walk?

One of the jobs I've done in my life is to work as a caregiver for a quadriplegic. This man had been shot in the neck and spent 3 months in a major trauma center before I started to work for him. I was his caregiver for 2 years until my full time job (working as a Certified Nursing Assistant and EKG Tech at a local hospital) started to conflict with my job as his caregiver.

But I was thinking about this today when I read that researchers have discovered how to make paralyzed lab rats walk with chemical and electrical stimulation. The person I worked as a caregiver for was always very interested in any news of research or potential medical breakthroughs in the field of paralysis, although he was not very optimistic that he would ever benefit from it. As it turned out he was right, since he passed away a couple of years after I stopped working as his caregiver.

I've seen a lot of misery in the 9 years I worked in health care. I've gotten to know a lot of people who were terminally ill, some of whom passed away on my watch. I've worked with people who were in severe pain  - both mental and physical. And I've worked with hundreds of people with Alzheimer disease.

But probably one of the saddest people I have ever worked with was this man who was paralyzed from the waste down. I remember him begging a family member to kill him because he couldn't bear living any longer.  I've heard similar things while working in the hospital and long term care settings, but usually from people who were in there 70s and 80s, not from someone who was in the prime of his life.

I wish the researchers the best of luck (although I don't believe in luck!) with getting paralyzed rats to walk again. And I sincerely hope that this research translates into useful medical knowledge that can improve the lives of paralyzed people such as the one I worked for.  But life is so short - and eternity is so long.
