The Story Behind Bobby Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe"

The Story Behind Bobby Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe" - performingsongwriter.com

Excerpt from this article:

"As Gentry told Fred Bronson, 'The song is sort of a study in unconscious cruelty. But everybody seems more concerned with what was thrown off the bridge than they are with the thoughtlessness of the people expressed in the song. What was thrown off the bridge really isn’t that important....the real message of the song, if there must be a message, revolves around the nonchalant way the family talks about the suicide. They sit there eating their peas and apple pie and talking, without even realizing that Billie Joe’s girlfriend is sitting at the table, a member of the family.'”

Some Thoughts on suicide, Funerals and Judgment Day

Suicide is a Liar and a Thief - redstate.com

Excerpt from this article:

"...I believe someone out there needs to hear/read these words. If that is you, just take 5 minutes to read on before you decide on anything else.  Five minutes of your time. That’s all I ask. Here’s what you need to know if you are considering suicide: Don’t do it....Please…don’t do it. You can come back from anything awful in this world, but suicide is the one place no one ever returns from.  Click here if you think you need help…or reach out to one person you trust. You are worth the help."
-------------------------------------------

I once heard someone say, "Everyone who is serious about suicide is dead." My mother passed away from cancer many years ago but like the author of the above article she too suffered from major depression throughout her life. She never talked about suicide, but I'm sure she thought about it - a lot!

The author of the article above calls suicide a liar. Satan - who is behind every suicidal thought - wants people to believe that they can commit suicide and then all their problems will go away. But that's a lie. The Bible says: "It is appointed unto man once to die, and after that the judgement." - Hebrews 9:27

But the Bible also has a lot of good advice for people who may be contemplating ending it all. About 3000 years ago King Solomon wrote:

"It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better." Ecclesiastes 7:2,3

Suicide Epidemic: Why Does the Number of People Killing Themselves Just Keep Going Up?

Suicide Epidemic: Why Does the Number of People Killing Themselves Just Keep Going Up? - endoftheamericandream.com

Excerpt from this article:

"Did you know that more Americans now die from suicide than are killed in car crashes each year?  According to the CDC, there has been a substantial spike in suicide deaths in the United States in recent years...We are a deeply, deeply unhappy nation, but of course this phenomenon is not just limited to America.  According to the World Health Organization, suicide is now the third highest cause of death in the entire world.  Globally, suicide rates have soared by 60 percent over the past 45 years, and the WHO is now projecting that by the year 2020 someone will be committing suicide somewhere in the world every 20 seconds."

Writer Challenges Christians Over Teen Suicide

'Are You Reaching Out To The Younger Generation?' Writer Challenges Christians Over Teen Suicide - christiannews.net

Excerpt from this article:

"A Christian author is challenging other Christians to reach out to the youth around them following a tragic story out of North Carolina that centers around the suicide of a teenage girl. 'Jesus loved people enough to go into their midst. He went in their homes. He confronted their sin. He sought out the lost sheep and saved them,' writes Tim Brown of Freedom Outpost in a recent article. 'He’s still doing it today through His Church, but the question I have is, is He doing it through you? Are you reaching out to the younger generation and bringing them to the truth, or are you too busy watching grown men in tights chase a ball made of pigskin?'”

Robin Williams, RIP? Reality, What a Concept!

I might have also titled this post: "Reality Bites!"

According to Foxnews.com:

"ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING actor and comedian Robin Williams, 63, found dead in apparent suicide, the Marin County Sheriff's Office says..." (from: Tragic and Sudden Loss: Robin Williams Dead at 63 in Apparent Suicide)
--------------------------------------------------

I grew up with Robin Williams. Well, OK, I've never met him, but I remember watching every episode of
Mork and Mindy. I remember watching Good Morning Vietnam when it came out, as well as

Mrs. Doubtfire and the Dead Poet's Society. And I even remember his stand up routine: Reality, What a Concept! (here is a link from Foxnews.com on some of Robin Williams greatest hits:

A Look Back at Some of Robin William's Greatest Hits

It's always sad when someone dies. As I get older I find myself spending more and more time reading the obituaries in the local paper. I read them because I am interested  in what they did in this life, whether they went to college or served in the military. What their greatest achievements were. But one of the first things I look for when reading an obituary is this: Were they a Christian?

Here are 2 great sermons that I'd like to recommend to those grieving the loss of one of Americas greatest comedians:

Some Personal Thoughts About Depression and Suicide, by Rodney Queen

Lawyers Are Killing Themselves - But Why?

Lawyers Are Killing Themselves - But Why? - newser.com

"Overworked and burdened by a mix of worries unique to their profession, lawyers have a growing tendency to kill themselves—and bar associations are just beginning to grapple with it, CNN reports. Eight of the nation's 50 associations are trying to stop the pattern after South Carolina lost six lawyers in an 18-month period, Oklahoma had a spate of losing one a month, and Kentucky saw 15 commit suicide since 2010."
----------------------------------------

Question: What do you call 1000 lawyers at the bottom of the lake?
Answer: A good start!

Sorry! No one should ever joke about suicide, but I think America would be a better place if there were a lot less lawyers.

"As a young lawyer
From the books that I'd read,
I thought justice and law were the same.
But I soon put such juvinile thoughts from my mind,

And I studied the rules of the game!"

Seven Dirty Secrets that Counselors and Mental Health Pros Won't Tell You

Seven Dirty Secrets that Counselors and Mental Health Pros Won't Tell You - eatthesunlight.com

5. Money Determines What Truth is Told ...
7. You Are Just a Number in a Bean Counter's Register. The bottom line is that it's about the bottom line. So many clients, so much money. Keep the practices full, the insurance companies appeased, and the revolving door turning."

A mental health professional once said to his client: "This is a game. It's rigged. And I'm going to win. You either play be my rules or I'll draw a small box and put you in it!"

Psychiatric Help 5 Cents: There Is No Peace Without Jesus!

Sorry Lucy. I'm sure your advice is worth every bit of 5 cents. But somethings in life really are free. And peace is one of them. So the next time someone comes to your booth and asks you to tell them how to get peace, tell them to listen to the following message by Mark H. Meyers:
