Someone once said that a politician looks to the next election, but a statesman looks to the next generation. The problem with America is that it is run by politicians (like Barack Obama who will go down in history as the man who spent $1 trillion dollars in 6 weeks) - and not by statesmen who care about the next generation (see Indoctrinated Lib Kids Shriek About How Bad the World Will Be).
