Years ago I used to work in a public hospital, and from time to time I would be asked to work to work on the 'psych ward'.  One of the residents had posted a copy of the poem Miss Heroin on the wall of the psychiatric ward I was working on. I liked it so much (the poem, not heroin!) that I memorized it.

If you struggle with addictions you can substitute heroin with your own particular issues. But it is still a great poem:

Miss Heroin

So now, little man, you've grown tired of grass
LSD, goofballs, cocaine and hash,
and someone, pretending to be a true friend,
said, "I'll introduce you to Miss Heroin."
Well honey, before you start fooling with me,
just let me inform you of how it will be.
For I will seduce you and make you my slave,
I've sent men much stronger than you to their graves.
You think you could never become a disgrace,
and end up addicted to Poppy seed waste.
So you'll start inhaling me one afternoon,
you'll take me into your arms very soon.
And once I've entered deep down in your veins,
The craving will nearly drive you insane.
You'll swindle your mother and just for a buck.
You'll turn into something vile and corrupt.
You'll mug and you'll steal for my narcotic charm,

There are people who need to be in prison - forever! (like the one Ann Coulter talks about in Lockett & Load). But there are many many more that could - and I believe should - be safely transitioned back into society. Drug offenders are just one category of prisoners that I believe could be released early. I'm not talking about letting drug dealers out early - no, throw the book at them. But the addict whose only crime is that he or she chose to get addicted to heroin or cocaine rather than prescription drugs doesn't need to be in prison!

Ann Coulter says in one of her books: "Of course prison works. It keeps people who commit crimes off the streets because they are in prison. Let's run the numbers: The recidivism rate for armed robbers behind bars is...hmmm, looks like zero percent!" (Source: One of Ann coulter's books!).

While I often agree with Ann Coulter, I think we part company here. The problem with the American judicial system (which still may be the best in the world!) is that it favors those with money and resources. If that were not the case, our President would have been locked up long ago (See: 76 Times Obama's White House Ilegally and Unethically Abused Its Power, as Documented by Sen. Pastor Weighs in on "Porn Addiction" and "Premarital Sex"

I am a regular listener to Pastor Trevor Hammack's News in Focus program on Sermonaudio.com, and I frequently link to his podcasts on my Today in the News feature on this blog.  I just finished listening to his podcast today, Christians and Premarital Sex, and I want to highly recommend it to my readers.

And if those programs didn’t work, it was your fault: You weren’t “working the steps.” The only alternative, as the 12-step slogan has it, was “jails, institutions, or death.” By 2000, 90 percent of American addiction treatment programs employed the 12-step approach."

I understand addiction. And I understand - at least to some extent - addicts. Because I am one! Addicts and addictions provide comedians with an endless supply of material for their trade. Robin Williams once joked that "reality is a crutch for those who can't handle drugs!" And what would musicians do if they did not have addicts to write songs about? (see: It's a Sin!). 

But for the addict - and their friends and family - addictions are no laughing matter. Here is one of the best descriptions I've ever found of addiction: "Imagine holding your breath for 2 minutes. Now imagine something much worse!"

That doesn't mean I sign off on everything AA or any other 12 step group teaches. As a Christian, I have to reject the idea that you can have any higher power, other than our Lord Jesus Christ. And while I am all in favor of medical treatments and medications to help with addictions, I don't accept the idea that "It is a disease." In fact, if I ever get around to reading Martin and Deidre Bobgan's book, 12 Steps to Destruction, I'm sure I will discover several other faults about AA and 12 Step Recovery groups.

But 12 Step groups - at least good ones - have one thing that even many churches can't offer an addict and that is this: fellow addicts who care about each other and are willing to go out of their way to help one another stay sober.

I remember a meeting I had with an elder from a church I wanted to join. He criticized  me for refusing to say no to my employer when they imposed 'mandatory overtime' on Sunday.  Then he said that he had "strictly kept the Sabbath [Sunday] for the past 37 years." But I'll never forget one of his last words to me [I did not join that church!]: "I'm not someone you can call at two o'clock in the morning!"

A good 12 Step or recovery group is made up of people who are not only willing to pick up the phone at two o'clock in the morning, but are willing to get out of bed, come and pick you up, take you out for coffee, listen, and then help you get home safely. In my opinion, it is this than makes AA and recovery groups work.

Let's Make A Dope Deal!

I have a confession to make: I have never seen any of the Cheech & Chong movies. I'm sure that revelation doesn't leave you gasping for breath, but I bring it up because, while I have never seen any of the Cheech & Chong movies, I am old enough to remember their audio cassettes that came out in the 1970s.

One of their skits was titled Let's Make a Dope Deal.  This was a parody of the popular game show Let's Make a Deal, only the 'prize' the the contestants were after - behind the three windows - was drugs (and of course, if you chose the wrong window, well, you get 'busted!').

It was a very humorous tape for a teenage boy who grew up in the country and had only been to a big city once or twice in his life - and that with his parents!

But I recall one day my parents were invited to spend Thanksgiving or Christmas with a relative who lived in a very large city. They had a teenage daughter - I think she was probably my second cousin - who lived at home with them.

One of my brothers and I were listening to the Cheech and Chong tape, Let's Make a Dope Deal, and my cousin (second cousin?) over heard it and asked if she could borrow it.  We said 'sure.'

Later I learned that my cousin was already heavily addicted to drugs. In fact, her addiction got so bad that at one point her parents had to kick her out of the house and lock the door to keep her from coming back inside!

That's been over 30 years ago, and I have no idea what ever became of my cousin. I had only met her once or twice before this at family gatherings, and I don't think I have seen her since that date.

I thought about this recently when I came across the following story: CIA Manages Drug Trade.  For people who do not subscribe to the conspiratorial theory of history (see Gary Allen's book None Dare Call it Conspiracy), reading an article like this can be unsettling. In fact, I have no doubt that many will reject the notion that the CIA is involved in the drug trade.

The CIA (and other government agencies, not the least of which is the United States military) are trying desperately to stop drugs from coming into this country. Or so we are told. I'm sorry but I don't believe it.

People who sell illegal drugs - and those who use them - are pawns in the hands of the wealthy elite who want to destroy America and surrender our sovereignty to a world government under the United Nations.

When that happens, the drug trade will stop. But don't expect much progress while the stars and stripes are still flying high!

I Want to Get High!

Imagine for a moment that you were at a public place - say a library - and you saw your 13 year old daughter hanging out with some of her classmates.  You decide to go over and say hi, but as you get closer you overhear the following conversation:

Your daughter: "I want to get high!"

Classmate #1 "Oh, that's right. You've never been high before."

Classmate #2 "I'll get high with you."

I was at the library recently and I overheard that conversation between 3 middle school girls - I'm guessing they were in 7th or 8th grade. I remember when I was that age I was getting high on a regular basis. My drug of choice was gasoline -sniffing or 'huffing' gas was a regular part of my life at that age.

The dangerous thing about drugs is not what it might do to your health. There are many legal things you can do to ruin your health without taking illegal drugs.  You can over eat and get heart disease. You can under eat and starve yourself. You can work yourself to death (literally!). You can speed and drive recklessly in a car or a motorcycle.

The real danger of drugs can be summed up in 9 letters: A.D.D.I.C.T.I.O.N.  Many drugs are addictive and it is the addictive aspect of drugs that make them so dangerous.  The Bible says:

"His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins." Proverbs 5:22

A lot of scientific studies has been done on addictions, and very educated people can go into great detail about the 'biochemical aspects' of this problem. Many of the 12 step programs call their addictions a 'disease.' I don't believe that.

Addictions, are first and foremost, a spiritual problem.  And therefore the solution to addictions must be spiritual as well.
